Tempers Cool Now t h a t tempers are cooling in the Boston integration situation, the stage seems set for a solution to the distruptions and violence that have sundered the L'ity for nearly a month. No doubt the presence of 450 riot-trained state and metropolitan district police helped discourage the militancy Not as encouraging is the demand of Kevin White, city's m.-yor. that the federal government take over task of enforcing Boston's integration plan. President Ford's response is quite correct. He declined to federal troops to Boston, but assigned U.S. attorneys assist the city in prosecuting those who violate federal equal rights laws. Boston's school integration problem is, after all, a one. and it can best be resolved through local efforts. Local leadership surely can defuse the volatile through compromise and negotiation. The challenge is squarely before Mayor White. His task is to enlist entire Boston community in the pursuit of a peaceful permanent solution.
