Husband Arrives in Midst of Excitement Outcome of Wifes Experienc in Doubt Pennsylvania Avenue Apartments Apartments in Ruins Youth Only Partly Clad Gives Timely Alarm Driven from a sick bed by fire and smoke Mrs William H Pennifill 22 years old and her 2 - year - old daughter Ethel were rescued from the third floor of an apartment house at 1713 Pennsylvania avenue northwest laat night A few minutes minutes more and the woman and child would have been absolutely cut oft from the stairway As they were descending the stairs the flames leaped up an obsolete obsolete elevator shaft to the third floor and in a short time the Pennifill apartment was in ruins Mother and child the former wrapped only in a blanket were carried to a poolroom on the second floor next door at m5SuftolrJrpm fright and ex posure the frail woman waited there for her physician who was Buttmoned directly after the rescue Finally she and her child were taken in by friends living in the neighborhood Mrs Pennifill has been very ill for several days and her physician would not venture an opinion as to the outcome outcome of last nights experience Te blaze gave the fire department no little concern at first A second alarm was turned in but the men soon had the tire under control The damage was roughly estimated at C000 Most of this is to the building which is owned by C H Glover Origin of the Blaze The blaze was caused by throwing a lighted match to the bottom of the elevator elevator shaft It set fire to a pile of paper and other rubbish there and the wooden framework burned like tinder The family of John M Boyd occupied the whole of the second floor On the third were the Pennlfills Alexander Conrad Conrad a sculptor Harry Adams a United States marine J P Rpake carpenter and a sister of Mr Pennifill All were practically burned out The crackling of the fire attracted James Boyd 21 years old to the corridor At the shaft he was met by a tongue of flame and smoke He was only partly clad but ran to the street shouting an alarm A passerby ran to the box at Seventeenth and H streets northwest and turned in an alarm There were no others In the Boyd apartment at the time Young Boyd had all he could do to get back and grab some of his clothing Smelling the smoke Mrs Pennifill went to the door but was driven back into her room The other tenants had also received a warning and were fighting their way down the stairs with some of their effects in their arms when Mrs Pennifill carrying her child burst from her door just above and begged them to assist her Adams carried her and the girl to the street and another helped carry them up fo the pool room All Escape Injury All managed to escape without In - Mrs Pennines husband a house painter painter returned home about this time and finding the house afire became frantic about his family ins mind was at once relieved when bj Vea - rned that they were safe He sura loned the physician and then went afterj Us sister who was out visiting friends The burning building is surrounded by old structures and Battalion Chief Henry after noting what progress the flames had made turned - in a second alarm This brought four morenstne companies to the scene making ten - la all The water tower also responded with Chief Warner who assumed charge of the fire To get to the1 flames the men had to go clear through the building Another force of men poured water Into each floor from the front The rear tf the building kwas gutted from top to - bottom
