The first Kmart (opened January 25, 1962 in San Fernando, CA)

Kmart #4000 in Garden City, Michigan, is typically remembered as the first Kmart store to open, on March 1, 1962. However, while it was the first full-size Kmart discount department store, it was not the first Kmart store to open. Kmart #4003 in San Fernando, only 24,000 square feet compared to Garden City's 80,000, was referred to by Kresge as a "bantam" K-Mart and was in fact originally intended to be a Kresge store until late in the planning process.
