Hmmm. Daniel Carter Wilson would have been 49 years old at the time. He had lived almost his entire life in TN, but around 1860 moved to VA. His wife died in VA in 1873, but very soon after he married Mary Polly Cook in Hancock CO TN. I think it very likely this is the same man, and he may have taught his son Nelson Carter to knife fight too.
