Frightened Soldier Killed as Grenade Explodes In Hand FORT CARSON, Colo. —(UP) —A Fort Worth soldier taking basic basic training at Fort Carson froze Tuesday with a live hand grenade grenade in his hand and was killed when it exploded. The Army said the fragmentation-type fragmentation-type grenade blew off the right hand and forearm of the trainee, Pvt. Robert H. Willhelm, 22. Louis Robinson Jr., a training sergeant who was in the grenade pit with Willhelm, was critically wounded by the blast. He was at the base hospital with wounds in the left arm, face and eyes. An Army spokesman said Willhelm Willhelm had thrown several unloaded unloaded practice grenades over a concrete concrete waif near the training pit. He was given the live grenade, but became so frightened that he froze and the grenade Went off in his hand. Willhelm joined the Army on Jan. 14 and was in the sixth of his eight weeks basic training.
