May 30, 1963 lOc per single caff Two Drown Sunday Afternoon In Rice Well Pool Near Katy in in to in Two lives were lost in a deep rice well pool Sunday afternoon when James Richmond Barley, Jr. better known as "Junior" and his wife's brother Stanley Allen, 12, drowned. The tragedy occurred at the well on the farm of W. C. Stockdick, Jr. According to Junior's wife, he was not swimming but was walking around the pool to show her where her little 5 year old brother, Tony, could wade. She said he slipped on the fresh clay and went under. She said the pool had been dug out and was 15' straight down at that place. Her brother Stanley was swimming at the time but went under hollaring "help" she said. Her uncle, Harold Robinson, 21, was also in the pool and them he in trying said they to save nearly drowned him. Junior's wife went for her father, Elbert Allen on the Barker farm and then tried to use the phone at Stockdick's to call for help but could'nt get the line. She then went to Walter P. Cook's. Mr. Cook and their house guest, Parrel Shaw, a champion HMCI PHOTO Trt County Jaycees Make A nurds swimmer and diver, went im--» mediately to help Elbert and Clyde Allen who were in the 50 x 100' pool searching for the boys. Mrs. Cook called Deputy Templeton and Dr. Bing. Templeton was there In 12 minutes and had called the Harris Co. Emergency Corp and Highway Patrolman Pat Adams. The Jersey Village unit was dispatched. Mr. Shaw and Mr. Cook dove and dove :rying to locate the bodies. Elbert Allen and his brother devised a way of dragging the x>ttom and found them that way. After they recovered the bodies artificial respiration was given in a futile effort to revive the two victims. Others at the pool at the vime of the accident were Harold Robinson's wife and their cousin Linda Clark. Junior was a good, clean toy, respected by all who knew him. He was employed at West Side Grocery and had carried groceries there 12 years, starting at the age of eight; he had many friends. He graduated from Ralph Bunche High School last year and married Lois Dean Allen on February 24th. She ia a granddaughter of the Alford Robinsons. Joint services are to be held Sunday. Stanley is the son of Altha Mae and Elbert Allen and Junior's parents are Geraldine and James Richmond Barley, Sr.
