The studio makeup artists belong to a very exclusive club, a tight union, which admits newcomers only when rare vacancies occur. ■Right now,” Westmore says, “we are training 10 new people to fill vacancies as they arise.” And, since the trainees perforce include various 'token” types, an Anglo-Saxon male would have a tough time being added to their charmed circle. “When you apply for the training,” Westmore continues, “you will be considered only if you’ve had two years of accredited art school or have a state cosmetologist's license.” Since it’s next to unpossible for the average young aspirant without special connections to crack into the close-knit ranks of Hollywood makeup artists and hair stylists, Westmore suggests to the young people who write for advice that they try for jobs at television stations and theaters in smaller cities as their best potential outlets for creativity.
