4 IV And It Should Stick! A CHAMPION of death sentences for •' convicted kidnapers ever since the ') hideous Lindbergh tragedy, The Morning Avalanche is broadly pleased yith^'the sentence meted out to Walter ' -McGee,* found guilty of kidnaping and mistreating the daughter of Kansas City s manager. , - However/the fight has just begun.. That 'McGee will swing by his dirty neck is not assured— and likely will not be assured until a travesty on American justice has been fully played, • For there will be appeals and appeals; '"requests for new trials and all the other iangdoodles of what we call a court system, If, in the end, McGee swings for his crime it will be victory for the decent cit• izenship— but that victory is likely to be still away off. * * * I ' F McGEE "beats the death rap"— and we all know he has a chance to do just that — other kidnapers and would-be kidnapers will be encouraged. "All we'll get is a jail stretch", they'll reason. "Let's take a chance to pick up some easy dough'*. And that's what a lot of them will do all-over the broad land of ours if McGee •'-gets off with less than the noose. They'll "take a chance" in the face of wishy-washy punishment. * * * F, on the other hand. McGee is hung by the neck until he is dead, dead, dead, the punishment will act as a deterrent and a grim warning to other members of the rapidly growing "snatcher's guild". The mobsters and the thugs will think a. long time before they run the chance of putting their precious necks inside a knotted rope. Kidnaping will be not nearly so popular as it is at the present. * * * , A S a protection to society and as a warning to other criminals, The Morning Avalanche will welcome the day that finds Walter McGee, blindfolded, on the scaffold. And we'd like to see the grisly picture of the hanging printed on the front page of every daily newspaper in America, with this caption': "Warning, Kidnapers! You May Be Next!" ff
