Reginald TEACHER AND PUPILS ' AE BUN 10 BITS BY Lawrencevllle, III.. Feb 8--Eight Neighbors living near by were the first to reach the school, and calls were immediately sent to Vincennes for ambulances to take the victims to hospitals for medical attention. The explosion occurred about 75 feet away from the schoolhouse. Ail of those killed were grouped about the can, and the rest of the pupils were either in the schoolhouse_or playing In the yard behind it. The authorities were told that boys, who were at plagr, had flshed the can from a creek runqtac by school yard. f ' ' It is believed that the container had floated down from a nitroglyceia magaxine about three-quarters of.a mile away. It was said that the practice is empty the cabs at the magaslnc, afterwards destroying them, and it rs believed that the container which, blew up was one that contained ousjr a small amount of explosive, arid after being thrown Into the creek floated down to the school. ^ The nitroglycerin is used extensively in "shooting" oil wells in the vicinity. It was said. Autbortiea, however, are fi to inquire further into the causes the accident. It was stated tonight All of the pupils who were killed were the children of farmers and oilmen residing In the vicinity of Law- rencevllle. Banyan lived In the country near here. are iliirul and another proo- ably fatally injured as the result, of the explosion of a can of -nltroglyc- erin at Crossroads School, two miles west of here, shortly ifter 12 o'clock yesterdcy. The dead are: Emmett Bunyan, SO years old, the teacher, and the following pupils: Raymond Groves, 9; Howard Lett, 7; Thomas Lett, his brother. 12; pharles Wei ton, 6; Robert McCausland. 12; Elmer Mellett, 10, and Richard Peters, 7. Lester Groves, 11, ar brother of Raymond Groves, is expected to die. Several other children received minor injuries in the explosion which occurred when one of the boys at/tempted to cut the top from the can with an ax. Bunyan and five of the borys were killed instantly and the other two died several hours afterward. The injured were taken to their homed and to- hospitals in Vincennea, Lad. Those whose injuries were slight were the victims of flying glass, every window in the schoolhouse, a one- story frame structure, befcag demolished by the force of the explosion. The structure was otherwise undamaged. The explosion was plainly heard in Lawrencevllle and persons hurrying toward the schoolhouse were met by children rusjitng screaming from the acene. · ,
