One more time - W. T. BURGESS. Publisher January 5, 1951 R. L....
W. T. BURGESS. Publisher January 5, 1951 R. L. BANGSBERG, Editor Report From Around Town A BIT LATE, perhaps, but we hear of a grand Christmas party given for all the children of Green Island. The philanthropist party-giver, Theresa Flannery, manager and owner of the Victoria hotel, 827 Green Bay street, entertained at least 150 youngsters. There was a Santa who made gifts of goodie- filled stockings and presents for all. The hostess also provided quantities of food for the partying younguns. —Maggie * * -ft NOMINATION FOR THE most nonchalant man in this city goes to Atty. Dan Flaherty. When co-worker John Coleman returned to this city from Gary, Ind., he called Flaherty and casually asked, "What's cooking?" Flaherty answered, "V- are, I'm afraid." Coleman asked for an explanation and Dan continued, "Well, the wall of the living room is afire. It started, I believe, from an overheated or faulty chimney." Coleman intended to terminate the con- versation right then, but Dan said, "Oh, you can use the phone, we already have called the lire department." The connection was severed, however., when John heard the whine of sirens. —Maicie it ft ft DRIVING RECORDS and low accident incidence were being discussed in county highway police offices a few days ago and it fell to Jack Bemis, 925 South 16th street, to relate his most unusual crackup. Some years ago, when Bemia was driving a spanking-new car, he drove to Mauston and parked in front of a store. The store owner came to the door and then events really happened. "That's a swell car you have . . ." the Mauston resident began. There was a long crash and rip of metal, then a splattering of glass. ". . . but not for long," the store- man concluded. A speeding vehicle had reduced the Bemis machine to a shape which sadly resembled the original. —Maggie
