Crowd Halts Communists exas Rally SAN ANTONIO, Tex. UP) -- A howling, angry crowd which battled 200 policemen and firemen and drpve 100 terror-stricken men and women from a Communist rally demanded the recall of Mayor Maverick. Maverick, storm center of Texas politics from the time he entered Congress a few years ago, had called out the entire police force and many firemen to protect the meeting, although declaring "I have sympathy whatever for Communism." Police estimated nearly two score persons were injured in the fighting that raged more than an last night at Municipal Auditorium, a memorial to American soldiers the World war. A 14-year-old boy was arrested but released. The demonstration was against meeting called by Mrs. Emma yuca Brooks, young Communist leader. Maverick, known as a Liberal warm friend of the New Deal, declared that while bitterly oppos- ed to Communism he would use his power to guarantee free and public assembly. Police estimated 400 leaders in crowd of 5.000 stormed the auditorium with stones and clubs, crashing windows and finally driv- the 100 men and women d for the rally out through basement and' rear exits. The meeting was broken up at the very before even a welcoming speech could be made. An estimated 3.000 persons then jammed the big main auditorium hear patriotic talks. Alexander Boynton, former Republican candidate fof governor and former district attorney of Bexar county (San Antonio) demanded Maverick's recall. He asked all those who favored Maverick's ouster to stand. The entire audience rose and shouted. The mayor could not be reached for a statement. Police patrols puarded his home throughout the night. At the height of the fighting police and firemen turned streams from fire hoses on the crowd discharged volleys of tear gas. There were repeated shouts and yelk "We want Maverick!" As far as known, the mayor not^«t the scene. Maverick in a broadcast, had ?aid "I have no sympathy for Communism. I disagree with its philosophy and with its practices. On the other hand. I love democracy and the liberties of constitution."
