Leon Fertig FALLS INTO MINE WORKINGS (Saturday, 16 March 1940, page 1, column 8)

Leon Fertig, 28, of Lavelle, remained in a critical condition today at the Ashland State Hospital where he was admitted yesterday afternoon after having been rescued from a long-abandoned mine workings into which he dropped a distance of 80 feet as the bottom of a bootleg coal hole gave way without warning. [The long article describes in detail the rescue, including the participation of his twin brother, Leo, in his rescue.]
