ADD MOTIVE POWER Western Railroads Break All Buying Records.; THE SAHTA FE'S HEW MONSTER Hew Mallett Is a Giant S Among Them All. Other Western Lines Have , Joined in Rush to Get Equipment.: As never before in their history the western railroads are buying new motive power to handle their immense freight and passenger traffic. The ssnta Fpl iRock Island, Missouri Pa cific, Chicago & Alton, Burlington and & cumber of other western trunk lines, have already added to their equipment by purchases of from ten to thirty new engines. One of the new type of passenger ngtne purchased by the Santa Fe was seen in Kansas City for the first time yesterday. The engine was stationed in tho Argentine yards for some time and attracted a lot of attention. The engine complete with the tender la 103 feet in length and 15 feet high. The tender tanks hold 4,000 gallons of oil and 10,000 gallons of water. The big iron horsa is one of the aew type of Mallet articulated compounds, and is built for speed as well as great hauling power. There are five pairs of driving wheels, seventy-three inches in diameter. The steam making surface is 4,756 square feet. And for the first time, the feed water heater, the euper-heater and reheater have been combined in the same locomotive. The new locomotives were made by the Baldwin locomotive works. The engine was brought to Topeka where it will be Inspected by the motive power officials, and after being fully tested will be sent to the mountains for fast passenger service. The Santa Fe has also received a few of the new freight engines which were recently ordered, also of the Mallet type. The freight engines are 112 feet in length and have eight pairs of drive wheels, each of them sixty-three inches in diameter. The freight engine boilers are eighty-four inches in diameter, and with the tender, weigh 450 tons. These freight and passenger locomotives, thirty, in number, represent in outlay of $1,500,000, the largest tquipment purchase ever made by the Banta Fe. The Burlington road has recently revived a number of their new type Tnonkey motion" engines, a type manufactured only within the past rear. The eccentrics are placed on ibe outside and only two are required, where four formerly did the work. The Rock Island has also received a number of engines of this type. The Missouri Pacific last spring placed an order for twenty freight locomotives, a number of which have been received and are now in use on many portions of the system. Announcement has just been made of an order placed by the Chicago & Alton for ten new freight engines of tho largest size of the Mikado type, These will be delivered in March. Winter Tourists Rates.
