THE SALOON EVIL. The report of the grand jury of Jackson county contains the following following reference to saloons: "We find that a large per eent of complaints of violations of the law coming before the grand jury for investigation arise from the saloons of our cities, and the environments of the saloons. We wish, as a grand jury, to extend our moral support to the officers of our rltles who are trying to enforce the laws and ordinances In their jurisdictions, for it seems deplorable deplorable that such large expense of law enforcement should become become a county burden when the violations arise under the enjoyment enjoyment by the cities of special privileges." Why taxpayers should be called upon continually to pay the expense caused by the saloon evil Is one of the difficult problems encountered In both city and county government. It is safe to say that the saloon evil costs the taxpayers more money than comes from any license system.
