Burroughs killed and Chaloupek nearly 1975 - Satanta Boy, Covered by Nitrate Fertilizer,...
Satanta Boy, Covered by Nitrate Fertilizer, Suffocates (Obituary on Page3) SATANTA—A 17-year-old Dale Burroughs Satanta youth suffocated Saturday morning when he was buried in nitrate fertilizer at the Satanta Co-op Plant. Officials are still investigating .he circumstances leading to the death of Dale Burroughs, who was helping unload a railroad car filled with the fertilizer at the time of the accident. "We're still checking into things," said Co-op manager Charles Claar. "Right now we don't know for sure whether he fell into the fertilizer or if it came down on him." A spokesman for the Haskell County Sheriff's office said Burroughs and another youth, Steve Chaloupek, were working inside the rail car at about 10 a.m. Saturday. "They were up in the car trying to loosen up some clumps in the fertilizer so it would flow out of the hoppers in the car," the spokesman said. "Evidently some of the material above them had worked loose and fell down on them. Burroughs was buried completely and Chaloupek was buried up to his chin." The sheriff's offi9er__said Chaloupek told them he worked himself loose from the fertilizer after being trapped for about an hour, but by the time he summoned help, Burroughs was dead. Claar, however, said indications are that Chaloupek wasn't in there for an hour. "He was pretty much in a state of shock when he gave his statement to the officers," said the Co-op manager. I don't think there's anything to indicate he was in there that long. Everything was in such a commotion that it's hard to keep track of the time. "You do what you have to do, and piece things together later," he said. "Steve may have worked 10 to 15 minutes trying to free Dale. But once you're buried under that stuff, you've got probably, at the most' a minute and a half and that's it." Burroughs had been working at the Co-op since October and had had previous expierience in unloading the fertilizer, Claar said. The two had unloaded one car earlier Saturday morning before starting in on the second and fatal one. "We stress safety here all we can," said the manager. "It's one of the 'no-nos' that you don't get into a car." Claar said he was out of town at the time of the mishap and didn't learn about it until 6 p.m. that night.
