4A- SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 25. 1 977 - CORSICANA DAILY SUN Godbey wants guarantee of prices for farmers By PETERTHADDEUS Sun Staff Writer America’s farmers should have a guaranteed price for certain crops backed by the federal government, says unannounced congressional hopeful Ron Godbey. Godbey, who says his formal announcement announcement of candidacy for the Sixth Congressional district seat is due within the next two months, spoke to a gathering of about 25 local citizens at Navarro College Saturday. In response to questions Godbey touched on subjects such as agriculture, the Panama Canal, National Health and insurance and education. Calling the proglem for America’s farmers “a complex problem” Godbey said the existing programs offered by the Department of Agriculture and the government as whole “were not adequate.” "THE STATE Department should develop export markets for food around the world, so the farmer can plan* fence row to fence row,” Godbey said. He said the new world markets for American grain would help stabilize prices and balance the United State’s trade deficit. However, since the development of world markets is a long range goal, Godbey says the government should guarantee a base price for their farm products so farmers won’t go broke. He said the present problems facing local farmers was “not of their making.” Godbey said the guaranteed price would prevent farmers from going bust. On the Panama Canal, the former television weatherman and previous candidate candidate for Cong. Olin Teague’s job, said the U.S. should keep the canal and try “diplomatically" to resolve differences with the Panamanians. He explained he would not like to see the canal in foreign hands becuase, “I fear the tolls on the canal would rise tremendously,” he said. “I think we can straighten out our differences differences with Panama. The U.S. should keep the canal. However,” he said laughing, “1 might like to swap IVIanhattan Island for it.” ON NATIONAL Health insurance, Godbey said, many services now paid for by the RON GODBEY government should not be. What happened to neighbors and relatives providing some of the fundamental services,” he asked adding that government now pays for cab rides to doctors for people on medical aid programs. Education that is currently federally funded, he said in response to a question, should continue to be funded thusly. He added “that of all the candidates” he has had the “most education and the most number of years at college.” Godbey’s Saturday talk was sponsored by friends of his with the help of Bobby Ross.
