Tne friends of John Allen, a ("olored fireman, who was dismissed by the Board of Safety for inefficiency, are making an effort to have him placed on the pension list. Allen was crippled in the service of the fire department and has been unable unable to find employment since hjls dismissal. dismissal. July 30, 1899. Allen, who was a member of the colored hose company in Ash street, was working on a fire In the rear of a residence in North Delaware street, was on the top of a ladder with a nosxle, when the water was turned on with such force that it was wrenched from his hands. He was struck ln the face and knocked to the srround, - Both arms were broken at the wrists, jone of them In other places. Allen said one of hla arms was not properly treated, and that the physicians who attended him failed to call On Mm for about a week after the first vlit. He said he was obliged to call otaer physicians, and have the fractures renet. Sir weeks later he was ordered i to report report for duty, and although he had but little use of one arm. he was able to drive part of the time, clean the jhorses, and keep busy about the fire I houe. When dismissed, he made application to be placed oa the pension fund, but was told that he could not be, - for the reason thst he was dismissed While In j active service. He said Chairman Roth.l of the Board of Safety, told him he wa3 Inefficient Inefficient because he was crippled. Allen served nine years In the service I of the fire department.
