Five Young Men Enlist in Army, Air Force Here Five young men from this area, including a combat veteran of World War II, enlisted in the U.S. Army and Air Force at the local recruiting station today. Noel C. Whalen, 25, of Bluford, re-enlisted in the Corps of Engineers Engineers for three years. Whalen, who attended high school in Mt. Vernon was with the Second Cavalry, Cavalry, known as "Patton's Ghosts", from "D" Day until the end of World War H. He was with the First Cavalry Division on occupation occupation duty in Japan. He re-enlisted for assignment to the 712th Engineer Engineer Depot Company at Granite City, 111., as a publications chief, In the grade of Sergeant, third grade. Elwood Cunningham, 20, of the Tolie Road, re-enlisted in the corps of Engineers for three years. He graduated from Robinson,, Robinson,, high school before entering the Air Force in 1943. For the past four years he has made Mt. Vernon his home. He is assigned to the 712th Engineer Depot Company Company at Granite city as an administrative administrative clerk typist in the fourth grade, or corporal. Jimmy Minor, 17, of south 16th street, enlisted in the Air Force for three years. He will report to Lackland Air Force Base at San Antonio, Texas for 17 weeks basic training, after which he will attend attend an Air Force technical school. Jimmy Joe Williams, 17, of 1116 Main street, also enlisted in the Air Force for three years and will leave for basic training at Lackland Lackland Air Force Base. Vern C. Leinard. 18, of 60 W. Center, Fairfield, enlisted for three years in the Army. He is a graduate graduate of Fairfield high school with the class of 1949 and will be given an opportunity to choose any tech- niacl school he wishes, as are all high school graduates. He will report report to Fort Riley, Kansas for basic training before attending technical school. Minor and Williams are the last who will be permitted to enlist enlist in the Air Force for three year periods. All enlistment for the regular Ajir Force will be four yaws, ! now
