1970 July 1 Ron Rescues Girl from Lake
The Register-News erred yesterday in describing an incident Saturday at the West Frankfort 4-H Camp. The paper said il-year-old Robyn Penrod of Mt. Vernon, was pulled from the camp lake after being underwater 12 minutes by Camp director Roy Smitherson who administered mouth-to- mouth resuscitation. Actually, the youngster suffered a spell of dizziness while on a barge on the lake and fell in according to Jefferson County farm advisor Ron Cornwell. He said the girl was in the water less than a minute before he pulled her back onto the barge. He said he then administered mouth - to . mouth resuscitation until the barge reached shore, where Smitherson assisted in reviving her. She was then taken to Union Hospital by a West Frankfort fire department ambulance. Cornwell said he feared parents of 4-H youngsters might think cam'' personnel were negligent if they had not noticed someone underwater for 12 minutes. He said there were four adult supervisors on the barge with the 20 young people. He added he fel* confident the missing girl would have been noticed within seconds if another girl had not seen Miss Penrod slip into the lake. He said all the youngsters on the barge were wearing inflated life preservers.
