Never before in the history of the town was Shamokin so intensely affected by a tragedy as in the case of the double killing on Wednesday even lng, when Lucy Doughten shot and killed her betrayer and then committed suicide. Nothing else is spoken of on the streets, in the stores, in the homes of the people. Varied are the opinions expressed, but they are almost invariably in favor of the unfortunate girl whose life was ruined and who was led to the rasli act by the thought of her approaching shame. That Lucy Doughten was a remarkably good girl considering the fact that her home training was not of the best is conceded. She was popular with all who knew iier.aud her tragic, awful death, by her own hand, has caused a wave of sorrow to sweep over the entire town. Iu school the girl made an excellent showing, standing at the head of her classes and several times winning prizes for good work. Slio was a poetess of no mean ability, and wrote manv verses which had about them an individual charm that was captivating. The schoolmates of Miss Doughten are sorrow stricken over the terrible happenings. They in union with the rest of the town's population, do not throw the blame on her, and though they do .not condone murder and self-destruction, still they cannot but help feel a certain respect for the girl, who, finding herself basely deceived, robbed of the brightest jewel womanhood can lay claim to, secured justice in her own way, sending to eternity a mo ment before her own the soul of the man who had effected her ruin. SOPHOMORES AT FUNERAL. The entire Sophomore class of the Shamokin high school, of which Miss Doughten was a member, attended the funeral on Saturday afternoon in a body. Also the class gave a beautiful floral tribute and a committee has been appointed to draw up resolutions of respect and condoleuce.
