Barlow is a man who eats the heart out of his work and is. proud of it. 'For the past four decades, Mr. Barlow has been engaged in an operation that has literally eaten up a huge mountain, leaving a one-half mile deep hole in its place/ Mr. Barlow is mines plant super- iptendent for Kennecott Copper rp.'s famed open-cut mine here. i When Mr. Barlow began his ca- jjieer at the mine it was barely a nick in the earth. Today, after removal removal of almost two billion tons yaste rock and low-grade copper ore, the Bingham pit is one of the man-made wonders of the world. Under his guidance, more than 2,000 men are at work making pit wider and deeper. THROUGH RANKS Barlow went to work in the Bingham mine four decades ago as a member of a surveying crew. He rose thrpiigh the ranks to his present position in command of the entire pit operation. He has been superintendent since 1954. The popular Clearfield native is respected on every Jevel of 'the pit for his knowledge of men, machinery machinery and mining. He was bom in 1903 on a Clearfield Clearfield farm operated by his parents, parents, Jesse H. and Sarah Stoker Barlow. . ·The Barlow family had come west to settle in Syracuse in In 1904, they purchased farmland in an area that was to become part of the Clearfield Naval Supply Supply Depot. In ,the 1920s, the Barlows Barlows moved into Clearfield to operate a general store. . One brother, Jesse D., is .executive .executive vice president of the Clearfield Clearfield State Bank. Eldon H. is part owner and manager of Western Western Auto Supply in Ogden. Gardner Gardner W. is a dispatcher for the Union Pacific in Ogden and a fourth brother, Ivan I,, is a retired Clearfield businessman. Barlow Furniture of Clearfield is owned by brother Wiimer and a sixth, Ora H. is a retired executive of the Mountain States Telephone Telephone and Telegraph Co. living Salt Lake City. Of the three Barlow sisters, one Mrs. C. P. Tree, makes her in Ogden. The others are Mrs. K. C. Tanner of Portland,. Ore., and Mrs. John Peacock of Mesa, Ariz. Boeing Gets Funds in Minuteman Job WASHINGTON Force contracts (UPD Air totaling $128,831,000 $128,831,000 have been awarded Boeing Boeing Co. for continued work on the Minuteman missile program. General Electric Co. received a $4,131,000 Air Force.award for engineering work on YJ-93 turbojet turbojet engines, and Lockheed Aircraft Aircraft Co. was awarded a $5,750,000 $5,750,000 contract for work on the Agena space satellite program at Sunnyvale,; Calif. EARLY LIFE Mr. Barlow spent his boyhood in the Clearfield area and graduated graduated from high school there. He joined Utah' Copper Co in 1922 was with the company when it became part of Kennecott. He married the former Lois Carrigan of Morgan in Ogden in 1926. They live in Midvale, only a glance away from the Bingham mine. In the. early part of his career, Mr. Barlow left the mine for brief periods to serve as underground mine engineer in California and as a civil engineer for the U.S. Forest Service.
