afflicted city. " - ; - .". A Good Man Gone. For some time past the friends of the Eev. Chas. W. Whitall, sector of the Protestant Episcopal Church at . Cfloxi, have been anticipating - his decease, from a long and painful illness, resulting from a' cumulation ; of . disease of the heart and dropsy; and their fears were finally realized on Monday last, 18th inst Bev. Mr. Whitall was an t old resident of New Orleans,' and his residence among as . was distinguished by that degree of usefulness, not . only in . the field of his special duties as . minister of a particular denomination, but in that wider area of general philanthropy which includes all men in its zeal, whatever their age, condition or religion. As rector, for many years, of the Seamen's Bethel in this dry, he waa noted for his. steady attention to - bis parishioners, whilst in times of general sickness, affliction and death, he was prominent in his unwearied efforts to relieve the . sick, console the poor, and soothe with the offices of religion the passage of many Bonis to - another sphere. Indeed,, to his zealous and constant discharge of his trying and painful duties as one of the Howards in the dreadful epidemic of 1853, is attributed the commencement of the disease of the heart - which finally undermined his system and cut abort his career. Besides acting among the Howards, Bev. Mr. Whitall was a member of other charita - "ble societies.'. He was Past Grand Master and Past Grand - Patriarch of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows; Past Grand Chaplain of the Grand Lodge of that Order in this State, and a member also of Crescent Lodge Ho. 8 of the order. Whilst here, he was a member of the Order of Free Masons, hav. ing been Grand Chaplain of the Grand Lodge, and at Biloxi waB a member of Mag - i nolia Lodge No. 123 of the aame body.
