FIVE INDICTED IN SLAYING OF MANAT»OL Cattle Theft Trial Witness Killed From Ambush rjOLD SPRINGS, Aug. 23. (fP}~ Murder indictments have been returned here against five farmers in connection with the ambush slaying of Amon Copeland at Point Blank last March. Defendants named in- the indict- met were J. Lee, 72; his sons, Obie Lee, Lonnle Lee and Leonard Lee: and Levi Whiteside, 18, hired hand \ on the Lee arm. They were given an examining trial at Point Blank in June. At present J. Lee is serving a term in Huntsville penitentiary for cattle theft. His three sons are in the San Jacinto county jail here. Whiteside is in a Conroe hospital, where he underwent an operation last week. F. M. Barler, assistant county attorney, said the five would be brought to trial here September 6. Copeland, the chief witness for the state against J. Lee in a cattle theft trial, was shot down the night of March 31 as he stood looking through the window of a rural school watching closing exercises. The shots were fired from the dark. At the examining trial Whiteside testified that he and the three Lee brothers had gone to the school in search of Copeland.
