1897-05-12-Times-Picayune-p4-[TaylorNote] - President McKlnley's political recognition of...
President McKlnley's political recognition of the colored race will probably comprise the effices of recorder of the district of Columbia, register of the treasury and minister to Hsytl, says a Washington cor-reswondent. It Is believed that Ex-Representative Cheatham, of North Carolina, will be appointed on Monday recorder of the eWrtriet, to succeed C. H. J. Taylor, who has Just resigned. Ex-Senator B, K. Bruce, of Mississippi, now a resident of Washington, will probably be made register of the treasury, and Ex-State Senator Green, of Ohio, minister to Haytl. Mr. Bruce preceded Taylor as recorder of the district, but had previously held the office of register of the treasury. Several minor places will, of course, be given to colored men, but it Is likely that the three places indicated will be all the Important appointment that they will get.
