Literary Cadet and Rhode-Island Statesman Archive

The Literary Cadet and Saturday Evening Bulletin was published by Smith & Parmenter weekly on Saturday evening at number nine, Market Square in Providence.

The editors described their intention, stating "Encouraged by the present prosperous condition of the State, and by the flattering aid already promised by numerous friends we are emboldened to present to the public proposals for publishing a literary and political paper, which we pledge ourselves to conduct on liberal and correct principles." The paper would aspire to "assume the character of a literary and scientific advocate."

In 1827, the title was changed to Literary Cadet and Rhode-Island Statesman with the same publishers and office location. The paper boasted a weekly circulation of over 4,000 copies and it averaged twelve columns of original editorial matter per issue. It then became a semi-weekly published Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The newspaper produced its final issue on July 18, 1829. On July 21, 1829 it merged with the Rhode Island American and Providence Gazette to form the Rhode Island American Statesman and Providence Gazette.
