Death of Dr. Whitlock, 1862 - the information called by A terrible affray...
the information called by A terrible affray occurred at Fort Stanton, New-Mexico, early in November. Capt. G ratios, an officer in CoL Cabsob's regiment of New-Mexican Volunteers, had an altercation with Dr. Whit-lock, a prominent citizen, and drew a revolver to shoot him. Dr. Wbitlocb drew to defend himself, and on seeing his assailant retreat called upon the bystanders to look at the coward. The taunt provoked Gbatdob to fire, which he did, wounding the doctor in the wrist, but a ball from bis revolver struck Gbatdob in the breast. As he sank to the ground he cried that he was murdered. Dr. Whitlock started fer the sutler'e store, near the scene of the unfortunate occurrence, intending to go to CoL Cabsob's headquarters, but before he reached there, Capt. Gbat-bob's company, under the lead of the Lieutenant, overtook him and discharged their muskets at him in a body. . He fell struck by 21 rifle balls and 98 buckshot. It subsequently appeared that Capt. Gbatdob had an understanding with, Lieut Mobbis that he was to provoke his company to avenge him if he fell.
