Herb Elliott ! Sets Metric Mile Record GOTHENBURG, Sweden (UPI) Australian Herb Elliott, who set a world record for the mile -in Dublin three weeks ago, shattered the world standard for the 1,500-meter "metric mile" Thursday night in beating the former record-holder and a host of other speedsters. The 20-year-old Elliott, running before a record crowd of 40,000, was clocked in 3-minutes and 36 seconds, easily beatine the listed record of 3:38.1 set by Stanislav Jungwirth of Czethoslavakia. Jungwirth finished a distant second Thursday night in 3:39.0. Elliott startled the track world on Aug. 6 when he lowered the record for the mile to 3:54.5 in a brilliant exhibition. In that same race, four other runners were clocked in less than four minutes. Murray Halberg of New Zealand and Albert Thomas of Australia, two of them, also ran in Thursday night's race as did Istvan Roszavolgyi of Hungary, Dan Waern of Sweden, Stefan Lewan-dowski of Poland. Ulf Bertil Lundh of Norwav, Ingvar Ericsson of Sweden and Derek Ibbotson of England. Halberg finished third in 3:39.4, Roszavolgyi was fourth in 3:40.0 and Waern was fifth in 3:40.9. They were followed in order by Lewandowski (3:41.1) Lundh (3:42.1). Ericsson (3:47.3), Ibbotson (3:50.8) and Thomas (3:55.1). Elliott, generally rated as the greatest mile runner ever, was wildly cheered by the record crowd, even when he jogged around the track before the start of the race. The weather was ideaL
