No: trace of them has ever been-found. The famous pilot was lost . ' v : y - . when she was only three weeks from her 40th birthday. She was born 100 years ago, on July 24,1897. In 1928, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. Although she was a passenger and did not fly the plane, the flight still made her world- famous. She wrote a book about the experience, "20 Hrs. 40 Min.,',' the length of this famous flight from Newfoundland to Wales. In January 1935, Amelia Earhart landed in Oakland, Calif., after a record-breaking flight from Honolulu Hawaii. She was the first person ever to fly alone from that island to the U.S. mainland. Crowds swarmed around her plane, giving her a hero's welcome. She changed ideas When Amelia Earhart started flying, people thought it was a dangerous way to travel. She helped change this idea. ^ ; She said there were many risks in long-distance flights and air races, but not in regular plane travel. "You might as well compare automobile racing with safe driving," she said. She also helped women gain respect. "Women must try to do things as. men have tried. When they fail, their failure must be a challenge to others," she said. She set records In 1932, she became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean alone. She flew 2,026 miles, from Newfoundland to Ireland, in 15 hours and 18 minutes. At one point the plane iced up and it plunged 3,000 feet through the clouds before she finally regained control. She had to fly through terrible fog. An engine caught on fire. But she made it. Newfoundland -*"" Ireland
