Pickets and Patriots Editorial in Lancaster Republican It Is the experience of mankind that every just and righteous cause has been hindered more by the zealots than by the antagonism of Its open opponents While the ultimate success of any movement possessing within Itself the soul 0 merit Is inevitable it Is certainly delayed even If it cannot be defeated by the unwise actions of extremists eager for the bubble reputation and impatient of that decorous and orderly procedure which most Impresses people of common ense The handful of suffragists at Washington who have made themselves ridiculous by picketing the White House and annoying the President of the United States at a time when the nation is at war would do more to defeat than to advance the cause of woman suffrage if they represented all who favor that reform But they do not Happily the great majority of the patriotic women of this country have no sympathy with those misguided Individuals who court martyrdom by a course of conduct that would be treasonable If Indulged In by men The latest leeue of the Woman Citizen the official organ of the National Amerlean Woman Suffrage Aaaoclatlon repudiates the pickets by saying that the absurd and unprofitable sensationalism of an extreme group o suffragists is not representative of the suffrage movement The women of America win not be Judged by the conduct of this ultra factlop It la not in the rank of the pickets that the strongest arguments for equal suffrage are found but In the earnest helpful self - acrflcng services of the counties thousands of women who are unselfishly working In many unostentatious but effective ways for country and humanity in this trying era The noble women of the United States are giving a fine account of themselves In Bed Cross work and numerous other patriotic directions ard they are thua proving their right to the ballot better than they could possibly do by the display of a churlish spirit at variance with their coun trys welfare
