GEORGE WILKINS GUTHRIE, United States ambassador to Japan, former mayor of Pittsburgh lonjf one of the leaders in the public and professional life of Pittsburgh, died suddenly March 8 at the embassy in Tokio. was 69 years old. News of the ambassador's death, which was due to apoplexy, reached Pittsburgh in a cablegram from Wheeler, secretary of the embassy, to the ambassador's brother, Robert W. Guthrie, of 6200 street, Pittsburgh. He was the Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania 1902, mayor of Pittsburgh 1906 1909, and nominated ambassador to Japan by President Wilson May 7, 1913.
