University club sponsors science fiction convention Zothique, University science fiction association, will sponsor a science fiction convention Friday through Sunday at the Sheraton Motor Inn. The convention officially has been labeled Solarcon III. Michael Bishop, author .of "Stolen Face" and "A Funeral for the Eyes of Fire;" Grant Canfield, a San Francisco cartoonist; and Tom Rcamy, a writer from Kansas, will be speakers for the event. fa "All three are authorities on science fiction writing and technique," Mike Emery, Zothique president, said. A noon forum featuring Canfield will be presented Friday in the Juarez Room, 211 W. Union. Films will be shown at the Sheraton along with panel discussions, luncheons, parties, competition in various activities and other events. Bishop, the featured speaker, will speak at 2 p.m. Sunday. "Our group would like to promote interest in science fiction and bring together those who are already interested," Emery, an English major, said. Science fiction is as serious as any other type of literature because it reflects futuristic speculations today, he added. Several universities and all interested groups from throughout the Southwest have been invited to attend along with the El Paso general public. T-shirts, books and various science fiction souvenirs will be sold at the convention. Advance tickets can be purchased for $5 w ith a SI discount for University students.
