n i n g but on was de- they Cmdr. Donald F. Helm, be- medaled veteran of World War II, returned last week to Naval Air Station where he won his wings more than 23 years ago. Helm, who is scheduled soon to relieve Cmdr. Frank Hearrell Hearrell as NAS operations officer, was in one of the first classes at NAS, arriving here in July, 1941, three months after the air station was commissioned. Helm won the Navy Cross the Navy's highest award, plu; the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Purple Heart while flying flying dive bombers with Air Group 19 in the Pacific during World War II. He won the Navy Cross while scoring a direct hit on the Japanese Japanese carrier Shikaku on Oct 25/1944. The DFC was for inflicting inflicting heavy damage on the Japanese cruiser Nachi. He was wounded in the head in August 1944, when he was shot down near the island of Chichi Jima He crash landed in the water and was picked up by a sub marine. A f t e r the war he wen through photo schools at Pensa feet: cola, Fla., and served in flee intelligence and at the Navy'; photo interpretation center. He went through jet transi tional training at Kingsvill NAAS, in 1955 but wound up in Anti - Submarine Warfan Squadron 24 as executive of ficer. CMDR. D. F. HELM . . . NAS operations ENS. L. H.
