The highest previous total was during the heyday of Rosie the Riviter in 1944, when the nation's working women numbered 18,850,000. Most of these millions of women are going back to desks or lathes out of simple necessity. The spiraling cost of keeping a family housed, fed and clothed is demanding two pay checks instead of one. It looks as if this is the way things are going to be for some time to come. Instead of agonizing over whether "woman's place is in the home," more and more wives and mothers are going quietly back to work, just to keep those home fires burning. • * •
