Billings Gazette urges city to form fire department - FflE DAILY GAZETTE. rubli-Oicil evr i y d.iy,...
FflE DAILY GAZETTE. rubli-Oicil evr i y d.iy, except Sunday, by tha (AZITIE PUBLISHING COMPANY i ntercd at Billinfis Post Office as Second Class Matter KILLINGS. MONTANA, MAY 9.48S5. TO OUR SUBSCRIBERS.'."'. OwIngYo the ravages of the fire The Montana Stock Gazette will not he issued until next week. To-day's daily, which has been enlarged, will be sent to all subscribers. Lithe meantime we crave ihe indulgence of our patrons, while we are doing the best we can .under the circumstances. , - ' iliiE PROTECTION. The subject of protection from lire lias been so often th". theme of newspaper articles here that it may become tiresome. As this will be the first time that the Daily Gazette has so offended, we will offer no apology for urging immediate Miction in this matter. The first thing is to form a fire department, enlist a sufficient number of good men and elect officers.; By a special act of the legislature, passed last session, the county commis sioners are authorized to levy a tax of three mills on the dollar on the assessable property of Billings and its additions for the purpose of providing fire protection. : This k'vy would amount to about 1,800, v and would be paid in Decern bcr. On the strength of this an engine and hose could be pxirchased, and 'we would then have some protec-'. lion. There is, we think, little use of talking about a steamer. . The City could not afford to buy it, nor tand the expense cf running it. A :;ocd. old-lahioned ( hand engine would do pretty : good work, if manned by well-drilled men, and .'-fter a time it could be pisposed of to some smaller town, and a steam-'V purchased if such a course were considered advisable. Possibly if we had a good system of water works and hydrants, the hand engine would be all that would be necessary for the-district beyond the reach of hydrants. Something at all events should be done -at once. Another lire like the last would . paralyze the town, and it may come at any moment. There will be a hundred and one -lifieiLiit opinions as to the best machine to buy, but the present i - the time to act.
