BOY DROWNS IN POND NEAR WHITTINGTON By Associated Press BENTON. 111., June 30.—Qiarles Atchison, 13, of Chicago Heights drowned in a farm pond near Whittington yesterday. The body was recovered last night by state police. Tiiey said the boy had been visiting his grandfather, Fred Atchison near Whittington in Franklin county. Charles and his 11-year-old brother, Jimmy, were playing in a leaky boat in the small pond, near the Johnson store on the Whittington curve. The boys cither jumped out of tho boat or it upset. Jimmy managed to swim to safety and ran for help. Theodore Ponder, who lives nearby, hurried to the scene and soon a crowd gathered. The farm pond was partially drained and the body was recovered at 5:30 p. m. Charles was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Atchison, former residents of the Whittington neighborhood. On vacation, he and his brother and parents were visiting at the Fred Atchison home near Whittington. The iwys" parents were visiting at Lawrenceville when the tragedy occurred.
