Ailerton Road Family Seeks School Bus 'Service For Eleven Year Old Boy At a. meeting of the borough school board lit the office of Superintendent of Schools Harold E. Chittemicn, yc/jterclay, a discussion of the problem of transportation for school children took up the greater part of the lime. Superintendent Chiftenden said i that the ODT has curtailed school j bus service and that as a result j children of families in isolated j districts have to walk a mile or i so to catch a bus at a designated point. j At the present, high school ! pupils are picked up by a bus at i Millville, and another bus goes i out a little later for grammar ! school children. The route of the j second bus has been extended to | Gunlown road where it picks up j two first-grade youngsters. The i superintendent said that the ODT j allowed this because the six-year olds are far too young to walk safely to the. bus stop. Tho difficulty arose as the family of an 11 year old boy requested that the school bus travel up Ai- lerton road to pick him up. The I children along Ailerton road all ;' walk clown to the old Millvillc | school and wait for the bus there. | Before the school was closed, the , boy used to walk a mile to it j daily, the superintendent said. i Several members of the board j said that many children downtown already walk a mile to meet buses or to school, and a measure directing the bus up Ailerton road would be unwise. The elementary school bus goes out completely empty to the end of the line and picks up the children on the return trip. If the Ailerton extension is allowed, the bus will be retracting its route, with children on board, bonce creating added dangers. It would not be feasible to unload the children and then come back for them again. The ODT beyond a doubt would not permit the extension, unless the present situation is too hazardous for the children, and it ap- parenty is not.
