Paul Sturgeon (Continued from Page 9) he said. He came close in 1945, but another man was picked for the job. "I was pretty disappointed," said Sturgeon, "but I decided there would be another time. It came sooner than I expected." The other man was transferred a few months later and the Sturgeon goal was realized. Nine years later he was elected a vice president and a director of the company and he serves in both those capacities today. His major responsibilities today are in the areas of corporate data-processing coordination, capital expenditures, Chance construction programs, setting operating budgets and plant security. As a Chance manager, officer and director, he has been a participant in every one of the company's expansion moves since World War II—a period in which Chance sales have multiplied some 21 times from $4 million to more than $85 million. In the same period, Chance employment in Centralia has increased from 325 to more than 1,000. "I get the most enjoyment out of seeing people grow and develop," Sturgeon said. While helping his company grow, Sturgeon also found time and energy to contribute to his community as well as to his church. He served 16 years as an alderman, then won the election as Mayor of Centralia in 1971, a job to which he brought the same measure of zestful interest which marks all of his activities. sil enjoy it," he said.
