"a of School, Laboratory for Citizenship/flan Is Theme of Ysleta High's Commencement "Our School, a Laboratory for the Development of Citizenship" has been chosen as the theme for the graduation program of Ysleta High School. Graduation will begin at 8 p. m. Friday iiv Hutchins Stadium. There are 108 graduates. The school band will play "Pomp and Circumstance" for the processional and recessional. Musical numbers will include "Carnival of Venice." a cornet solo by Robert Velarde and "When Day Is Done," a vocal number by the Feather- stones, girls' trio composed of Eddie Cottrell, Mary Joyce Carter and Dorothy Ann Scott. Members of the class will deliver all speeches' which each speaker wrote. Bob Dickson, salutatoriati, will speak on "Student Government." His talk will include how high school students learn about the government and how to be good citizens in a democratic country through voting, campaigning and choosing candidates in school elections. "National Honor" will be the subject of a talk by Robert Velarde. The history of the National Honor Society, its establishment in the United States and in Ysleta High School will be, discussed. Other topics in Robert's speech are the purpose of th° National Honor Society and the four ideals of the organization: character, scholarship, leadership and service. Jo Ann Eidgeway will speak on "Our Activity Program," which will include the various activities such as Latin Club, Spanish Club. Chemo-Physics and other organizations and how they contribute to good citizenship and democracy in later life. ' "Our Program of Studies" will be the topic discussed by Joe Kli'tts. His talk will include a philosophy of school and how va- rious courses, such as foreign languages, history, civics and literature, prepare the students* for i good citizenship. i Gisela Laufen. valedictorian, willi speak on "Democracy and Educa-j tion." Miss Laufen will tell of the! educational opportunities for people in the United States and compare them with those in Germany where only children of the upper classes have real educational advantages. She attented school in Germany three years ago. Cruz Alderete will give the invocation and Jack Mischen the benediction. J. M. Hanks, superintendent of Ysleta Schools, will present the diplomas.
