What's 4»<»ing On 1L iamlef Leads Are Assigned; 4 Caine Mutiny^ Opens Thursday By RAY WALTER The four leads in "Hamlet", first of the Shakespeare Festival plays, have been selected by Hal Chidnoff, director. In the title role will be Henry Balloni Jr., \vho has appeared in several PLT plays. Robert Aden has been cast as Claudius, and Trudy Hurley as Gertrude. The role of Ophelia was assigned to Jackie Qualman, whose most recent appearance with PLT was as Laura in "The Glass Menagerie," last February. At 2 p.m. next Sunday, and 8 p.m. Jan 9, Chidnoff will conduct tryouts for the rest of the cast. Twenty men are needed for major and minor roles, and three women for minor roles. Chidnoff assures that all persons who appear will get an audition, and emphasizes that whether a person receives a major or minor role it will be a great help in learning Shakespeare. * * * "THE CAINE MUTINY Court-Martial," based on one chapter of Herman Wouk's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, takes to Phoenix Little Theater stage Thursday night. It runs through Jan. 14. Opening night performance starts at 8 o'clock, all others at 8:30. The play was first presented in Santa Bar- bara, Calif., in 1953, and the next year opened in New York. It's been done as a movie, and also on television. The role of Captain Queeg will be taken by Frank Mullen and that of Lieutenant. Maryk, who relieved the skipper of his ship, by Lee Prugh. Bob .Aden will be Lt. Barney Greenwald, defense counsel for Maryk. All three have appeared in a number of PLT productions. Making his debut at the Little Theater will be Steve McCall as Lt. Com. John Challee. McCall was in Actors Lab, Los Angeles, and Players Theater, Hollywood. It will be their "first" on any stage for Jim Thomas and William L. Hermann. Thomas will be Lt. Thomas Keefer. Hermann is Captain Blakely, president of the court- martial board. Around this newsroom and that of the Gazette he's just plain Bill. Others in supporting roles are Douglas Reed, Channing G. Duvall, Jerry Albert Svendsen, Dr. Paul J. Matte, Taylor Reed, Herbert Cooper, and Ray A. Chavez. Members of the court will be Bill Black, Jim McKenzie, Robert Laabs, and Lawrence J. Sandell. Robert Begam is director, assisted by his wife, Helen. Jackie Qualman is stage manager.
