(AP) -- A multimillion-dollar radio antenna able to contact space vehicles will be built soon on California's Mojave Desert, the Defense Department announced. The Defense Department said it will be built by the Army's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., and installed at Camp Irwin. Antenna Being Built 85-foot, jowl-shaped antenna will be the first step in building ground equipment for the lunar probe program, the department said. Scientists from the Army's jet ropulsion laboratory here will uild the antenna at Camp Irwin, an Army reservation 6n the desert 125 miles northeast of Los Angeles. Roy W. Johnson, director of the Advanced Research Projects agency of the Defense Department, said the antenna is expect- ed to be In operation by the end of the year. Dr. Eberhardt Rechtin, chief of guidance research at the laboratory, said lessons learned from U. S. satellites will be used "in solving the next problem--tracking and communicating with lunar vehicles at ranges up to 250,000 miles." The antenna will have gears! and motors permitting it to fol-' low a space vehicle in orbit. Camp Irwin was selected as the site because of its isolated location far from most man-made interference such as auto ignition systems, power lines, aircraft radios and commercial radio and television stations.
