Barrett, aud wife, of 815 South Broad street, narrowly escaped serious injury or possible i death on Thursday evening, at 7.30 I o'clock, when the child ran on the street and was struck by a passing machine. •James Arnold, of 1116 Chestnut street, who was with his father, William Arnold, was driving south on Ninth street. At Spring street James Barrett was playing with his S year old cbusin, Daniel Grenner, of 101S Spring street. Little James ran across from the east side of Ninth towards Tenth street and did not see the approaching machine. Arnold, however, saw the slight figure running in front of the machine, and with hasty and com- mandable thought, put on the«brakes. The child was picked up from the street where he was lying between the twq front wheels. He was taken immediately to Dr. John J. Light, of 21 South Ninth street, who dressed the wounds. The child, it was found, was not seriously injured, but badly scared. Ho is" suffering from a few bruises, and a contusion on the right knee. His condition is reported to be excellent today.
