The Cordova Daily Times Archive

Published from December 2, 1914, until January 17, 1947, by Harry G. Steel, Charles H. Wilcox, and Charles H. Schiffler, and edited by Steel and Everett H. Pettijohn, the Cordova Daily Times provided its readers newswire stories and extensive coverage, particularly during World War I. According to Judge James Wickersham's A Bibliography of Alaskan Literature, ownership of the paper passed to Steel as editor and manager on March 11, 1916. Steel and Pettijohn published a concurrent weekly edition called the Alaska Times from 1914 until September 25, 1920, edited by Steel, Schiffler, and Wilcox.

Steel, a fixture in the Alaska newspaper world who had previously edited the Seward Gateway and the Nome Daily Nugget, endured a longtime battle with alcoholism and took a leave of absence in Seattle in 1936. While there to seek treatment, Steel passed away, and his sister, Annette Steel Ladd from Washington, D.C., took over the paper. In 1939, Pettijohn bought the paper back from Ladd. Pettijohn cut back the circulation to tri-weekly in 1947 and dropped "Daily" from the masthead. Now known as the Cordova Times, the paper has continued publishing from January 20, 1947, to the present day.
