embezzlement has not yet been made public but it is the prevailing opinion that it will reach a larger figure than has been anticipated Who will be the assignee is still a matter of conjecture Lawyer Bennett the firms at torney was much excited this morning when seen about the affairs of the company He said he could not tell who the assignee will be or when he will be appointed A great deal of Days as a Distributing Point Are Numbered Hills System Special to the Gazette New York April 8 After its protracted Easter holiday the London stock exchange resumed business today Apparently the beara on this side of the water have made the most of their time and have supplied Englishmen liberally with doleful tidings concerning events in this country The London market for our securities was weak in spots where our market was weak yesterday Union Pacific registered the greatest declines reflecting the vague bear talk about that property which has been so extensively indulged in on Wall street during the past few days Headings weakness was attributed by many to a disappointment over the supposed failure of attempts to effect the removal of Mr Corbin in which Londoners were active Our own market was insignificant Manhattan was the principal feature The movement of this stock today was similar to a rise of LakeShore a few weeks ago A fairsized buying order caused a considerable rise in prices thereby showing how strongly stock is held This stimulated some trading The Horn silver mining shares were the most active stocks in the extremely limited market Selling was due to the fact that shares were largely held by tho firm of Georgo Sistares Sons Co which failed yesterday The total sales of listed stocks to noon wero only 26300 shares Manhattan leading with 3393 shares Tho dullness was appaling The news of the death of Junius Morgan the London banker was received with regret It will it is said have no effect on tho St Paul trust of 2030J0 shares in London of which he was the manager Bostonians continued the good work of bulling Atchison Todays report was that February earnings showed a net increase of 263637 Advices from Chicago report a growing belief that there will be an unpleasantly lively war of St Paul and seaboard rates this summer Mr Hillwith his Great Northern system is certainly shaking things up In Wall street many predictions aro made to the effect that Chicagos days as a distributing point are numbered and that in the future she must rely upon her manufactures The geographical advantages of Mr Hills system of steamships and raihouds is talked of constantly The Great Northern establishment of a seventyone cent scale between St Paul and the seaboard is regarded as fixing maximum rates for through business and also for local business from Chicago to St Paul There are fears too that the National Despatch and Lehigh Valley will introduce the 71 cent scale on rates to St Paul via Chicago This would demoralize intermediate rates PKOPHETSTOWN NO MORE Erased From the Face of the Earth Rumor Das It Fifty People Were Killed by tho Tornado St Louis Mo April 8 Meager dispatches received here say the village of Prophetstown 111 has
