Special to the Gazette El Paso Tex March 15 Mc Guire the local agent of the Atchison TopekA and Santa Fe Railway notified the merchants of this city that no more freight would be received by that line until farther notice as the engineers struck at I oclock this afternoon all along the line The general freight agent ot the Santa Fe Railway was notified few days since that if the Santa Fe Hallway continued to handle Chicago Burlington and Qaincy freight the engineers an the Snta Fe system would quit work No reply was made to the engineers end a strike was the result An effort will be made by the Santa Fe folks to continue their passenger trains ont ot this city but the outlook is gloomy THEY SAY THRY ARK TIKEU Kansas City Mo Match 15 The erg neers and firemen on the vast system of the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad Company went out on a strike at 4 oxlock this afternoon The strike created immense excitement and surprite in this city for the reason that the road has not been handling Burlington freign That the strike was ordered by some oz In authority there is no doubt but in this city the men profess utter ignorance ot the issuing of any such order and say tbey have quit because they ara tircd The first indication ot trouble here was at 480 oclock this afternoon tat which hour the Osage City express scheduled to depart Conductor Mnray gave theorder to start when Engineer Qlggins quietly stepped down from the cab and refused to pull ont The train was Anally sent out an hour later with Eaiaeer Farst at the throttle Farst jlset a regular jSants Fa engineer but he has a grievance against the Brotherhood and as he mounted the engine he remarked The Brotherhood gave me the worst of it once now I am going to get even At the same time that Higgles left his engine at tne Union depot the men employed in the Santa Fe freight yards at Argentine quit work all declaring themselves tired Nothing positive can be said as to the origin or canse of the strike The men had grievance month ago and at that time had a conference witb the offlcials and they were granted all they asked lor The resolutions adopted at the grievance committee meeting at Topeka some days ago threatened a strike if the company accepted any Burlingtonfreight bnt it has been understood that the Ssnta Fe was not doing any of the boycotted easiness whatever There is no one in Kansas City authorized to speak for the strikers Chairman Conroe ot the grievance committee having left last night It is cot known at this writing how far the strike extends but it Is understood that it is morning It is stated that the engineers were last nleht given to understand they were not compi lied to handle Chicago Burlington and Qaincy freight if they did not desire to do so and as a consequence all the cars of that line are apparently being side tracked in the Union Pacific yards The yards are crowded with Chicago Burlington and Qaincy cars The company has evidently determined to
