The proposed campaign of the Rev. Dr. Walter Gwynne of New York or a federal constitutional amendment prohibiting divorces does not rece've unqualified endorsement from Judge James A. McClure and Judge Georsre H. Whitcomb of the Shawnee county district court.

These men, who hear several di vorce cases each week, admit the evil is becoming a menace to the country, but they view it in a lisht broad enough to acknowledge that force cannot be used in making people live together. The P.ev. Doctor Gwynne is genera! secretary of the Society for the Upholding of the Sanctity of Marriage and not only wants the constitutional amendment prohibiting divorces but asks that ministers refuse to marry divorced persons. Would Increase Immorality. "There is no doubt," said Judge McClure, "that there is too much laxity In our divorce laws, and that the evil is becoming a menace to 'lie country.

But I think absolute prohibition would be going to the other extreme. Personally, I believe education would be more efficient than prohibition. If divorces could not be obtained under any circumstances, I think it would result in greater immorality. In North Carolina there are no divorce laws and what this leads to is plainly recognized in the statutes, which provide that a man cannot will more than one-fourth of his estate to a paramour. "But I do think divorces should be harder to obtain.

One good law in Kansas is that which requires a divorce petition to remain on file for sixty davs before a hearing. This gives the parties, who may have rushed into court in the passion of the moment, time to cool down and think it over. As a result, one-third of the cases filed are dismissed. And nine-tenths of the others are granted by default. Percentage Varies.

"There certainly should be something done to lessen the evil, but I don't think prohibition will do it effectively." Essential Sometimes. It lre-iuently happened that one party or the other found themselves, perhaps Innocently, in the most miserable circumstances. What should be done? Deny them a divorce would not alleviate their condition.

Gertrude Emerson, well known writer, scientiest and traveler, sailed on the Japanese steamship Siberia Maru for a year's tour of the Orient, accompanied by Donald C. Thompson, of Topeka, war correspondent and photographer, and Mrs. Thompson. The party is being sent out by Asia, the American magazine on the Orient, of which Miss Emerson Is associate editor, for the purpose of making a pictorial record of the customs and industries of the remoter, parts of the east.

Fifteen countries will be visited. many of them far off tne beaten track of eastern travel, such as Mongolia. Sumatra, Java, Slam, and Borneo. Miss Emerson will gather material for stories, and supervise the making of the pictures. She Is an authority on oriental life, having spent several vears as teacher and student in Japan, China, and Korea.

She is a contributor to many magazines on oriental sub jects. Thompson's Daring Pictures. Donald C. Thompson was corre spondent and photographer during the war for a well known American week ly. His moving pictures of the battlefields of Russia and Siberia were sensational, daring achievements.

He produced a remarkable series or mov ing pictures during the actual fighting. He was later attached to the Rumanian food administration. rie carries a complete and modern equip ment for making pictures in every climate and under every condition. He will be assisted by Mrs. Thompson, herself an expert photographer.

The Thompsons have not been home for several months. The purpose of the expedition is to make a permanent photographic and moving picture record of native festivals, industries, dress, arts and handcrafts in eastern countries, to be shown in short length news reels in an entertaining and informative fashion. He has lived in Topeka the last nine years. FLORENCE HAS GIL BOOM Reorganized Chamber or Commerce Hires Newspaper Man as Secretary. Florence, July 10.

A new hotel, adequate and continuous electric service, a larger and better water supply, extension of the sewerage system and platting of new residential districts. These are some of the ambitions for the city of Florence which the Chamber of Commerce hopes to realize thru the establishment of permanent headquarters with a paid sec retary in charge. Many other dreams came true this spring when it developed that the city was located in a new oil field. Old buildings have been torn down or moved away to accommodate a score or more of handsome new brick structures, some of which are completed, others are under construction and others barely started. Not all of Florence's development was caused by the oil boom, however.

Before oil was found Raymond Gear had broken ground for a new $60,000 theater now nearing completion. A bank, for which the foundation nas just been laid, had been planned before the boom. The city had already taken action necessary to pave the streets and this work had actually started when the "Discovery" well was rii-niori into, tb oil sand.
