FRIDAY MORNING, PfcCEMBEE 13. THE AMARILLQ DAILY NEWS, AMARIXJX). REGION ONE GRID CROWN ON LINE TODAY PAGE SSTVBJNTEBtf Arizona- Star Grown; Davis Finiskes on Top in Rushing NEW YORK, Deo, 11 Enke, Jr. of the University of was the nation's 1947 leader in total offense, Wilton "Hook" Davis of Hflrdln-Simmons captured the ball-carying championship and Charles Conerly of Mississippi was the forward passing king, the National Collegiate Bureau announced today. Enke, who started the season as a bench warmer, wound up with the second highest mark in total offense in collegiate football history.

Enke is the son of the Arizona chief football scout and basketball coach. Despite ranking 12th in the country as a passer In 1946, he wasn't even listed as a starter in his school's gridiron brochure this fall. But he proved to be the year's most consistent gainer, and i ished with a rush against Marquette, Kansas nnd Utah to sail past Oonerly leader for aeven consecutive weeks with yards via rushing and pawing' in his 10 games. Conerly, the forward passing leader with 133 completions, second in total offense with 1,784 rushing md passing- yards. Enke got little or no recognition until his sensational showing against Kansas, th- Big Six co-champion, where he collected 364 yards for the season's second high one-game total.

Bobby Gage of Clemson was high with against Auburn. In his finale against Utah, Rocky Mountain champion, ht collected another 169 yards to wrest honors from Oonerly and rank second to record-holder Prankle Sinkwich of Gorgia, who compiled 2,187 yards in 1942, Conerly, too, rushed and passtd for a greater yardage 1,784 -than anyone since Sinkwich. His figure is seventh high in National Athletic Bureau hit- tory, being Hiivpassed only by Bud Bohwonk, Washington University (St. Louis) yards, in 1941; Davie O'Brien, Texas Christian, 1,847 in Bill Dudley, Virginia, 1,824 In, 1941, and Sink- wich again in 1941, 1,784. Davis, in leading the ball-carriers, amassed 1,173 yards 193 tries.

Thus a Hardin-Simmons grld- led the country in rushing ior ihe school's third consecutive playing season. Rudy "Little Doc" Mobley had a record 1,281 In 1942 and when he and Hardin- Simmons resumed football in 1948 after thf war hr led with 1,262. The game will end the season, since the A platoons won't begin their playoff plan to establish a state -title until next season. It would be interesting to see how far Shamrock or Perryton would go had the plan been put into effect during the current campaign. Amarillo horsemen now claim that the Speed Bowl track, -a'-quarter-mile south of Canyon highway on Bowie, is the 'best anrt fastest in the Southwest, not even excepting the one at Tucson, where the world's fastest quarter horses perform. Were Qathered by Accident DALLAS, Dec, 11 Coach Matty Bell of Southern Methodist said today he had enough Information on Perm Setate to know his Mustang's will really have to hump it 1 to have a chance the Eastern powerhouse. Most of this information was accidental.

Matty's scout really was looking over Pittsburgh when Pitt played Penn State Nov. 22 and Southern Methodist had no idea it would be meeting the latter in a bowl game. At that time SMU still had Baylor and Texas Christian to play and Penn State hadn't entered into any Cotton Bowl conjecture. The. scout, Clinton "Red" MoClain, had been told to chart both teams.

He paid mast attention, however, to Pittsburgh, a team that meets Southern Methodiafc in the opening game next fall. Bus McClain brought back reports that Penn had great running game, a mighty line and could pass with the best of them if necessary. Bell gets a little nettled when they try to tell him Penn didn't play a strong schedule. "West Virginia and Navy are darn good football teams," he said.
