March 22, 1972 State Federation Track Meet Senior Year 880
Duane Nelson wins open half mile at federation track meet An outstanding open half mile by Duane Nelson highlighted Humboldt high School's performance performance in the state federation track meet held at Graceland College, Lamoni, last Saturday. Nelson steamed to a first- place finish in the 880, beating out 48 other competitors in the event. He posted a time of 2:02, rated by Humboldt track coach Gary Newell as an excellent early-season clocking. Nelson also anchored Hurn- boldt's two-mile relay team with a 2:06.7 half. Other members of the quartet were Kevin Brownfield Brownfield (2:08.4), Terry Brownfield Brownfield (2:16.5) and Shane Albertson Albertson (2:25.8). Other entries for Humboldt were Paul Larson, who went 19-7-1/2 in the long jump, Randy Randy Thompson, who heaved the shot 45-9-1/2, and Mike Allen, who cleared 5-5 in the high jump. Neither the relay team nor the field event entries were among the top finishers. This Saturday Humboldt will send several competitors to the state indoor track meet at Iowa City.
