Dick Lane is getting his "Whoa, Nellies" warmed up. The Big Match is scheduled or Friday night at the Long Beach Municipal Municipal Auditorium. Don't ask what big match. Everyone knows it's king Edouard Carpentier vs. Count Billy Varga. "I would have to say," said Lane Tuesday Tuesday as he joined a host of wrestling personalities personalities for a Long Beach press conference, conference, "That this is the first match in many, many years that I would pay to see." Now, everybody knows Dick Lane, the voice of wrestling for many, many years, is not going to have to pay. But a bunch of hundred people will. And it's being called in the wrestling business the best match of the year in California. Carpentier, a 31-year-old Parisian who speaks fluent French and never has lost a wrestling match, said this will make victory victory No. 1,001 in his undefeated career. Varga, who is 37 and speaks like a college college professor (and who is writing a book which might be titled "Grappling for a Buck"--or "Ouuuch") says he should be at least a 7-point favorite to break the string. "I consider Carpentier a Johnny-come- lately," Varga commented across the table. Said Carpentier in his fluent French: "Pardon?" "Pardon?" Jules Strongbow, unofficial interpre- say ter, leaned forward, explaining "He you are Jacques arrivee retarded." This seemed to make the Frenchman very angry and soon after he left. No one would vouch for Strongbow's French. ' ANYWAY, IT SEEMS this is one of those matches that comes along only rarely. In the only previous meeting of two (a year ago) Carpentier escaped with a hole in his head requiring eight stitches. He also escaped with a draw decision. "This will not be the occurrence this time," interjected Count Varga, who re portedly inherited the title from a noble pop. Varga said his Norfh America heavyweight heavyweight championship will not be at stake. Just Carpentier's world crown, which is sanctioned by the NAWA ruling body (that's North America Wrestling Alliance). "If you beat Carpentier you will have to defend against Pat O'Connor," opined Dick Lane. That'll really pack 'em in, he added. O'Connor is AWA world champion. "I consider him a Johnny-come-lately, too" shot back Varga, "Pardon?" asked Carpentier, leaning forward again. Strong- bow whispered in the champ's ear. The champ looked terribly upset that time. I think he'd better find a new interpreter. interpreter. is
