WHITE PUPILS BOYCOTT COLP GRADE SCHOOL Shun Negro Classes; -Some Attend Cartervilte, Pay Tuition. COLP, HI. Wl — White pupils are boycotting a previously all- Negro grade school here, but classes were conducted for the 53 Negro children enrolled. None of an estimated 40 white pupils in the district showed up for the start of the fall semester Monday and they remained away from the school again today. There was no demonstration. A reporter who asked Mayor Frank Caliper where the white children would attend school was told it "is none of your business" and that it was a matter that concerned only Colp residents. Eighteen of the white children enrolled at a grade school in nearby Carterville and will pay tuition of $200 annually. Their parents must pay for their transportation to school. Taft Baker, principal of the Carterville school, said he turned down several other Colp children because their parents were unable to pay the tuition. One Colp resident with three small children said he was moving to Carterville. "I can rent a place cheaper over there than it would be to pay the tuition," lie said. Two other Colp children were attending the Carterville school tuition-free after moving in with Carterville relatives. Mayor Caliper said "there hasn't been a boycott" and that the white pupils had been taken in by the Carterville School Dis- (Continued on page two)
