Mr. George Mayhew, Sandy Hook pilot of boat David Mitchell No. 3, reports that on the 12th inst., 16 miles S half E from Barnegat, they passed a sunken schooner with her stern out of water. Her name could not be ascertained, but hailed from Philadelphia. She had an ensign flying at her peak and from appearances must have had sail on her and gone down head first. At that time the wreck was ling in a very dangerous position for vessels either coming in or going to the southward.
